MATH 231: Linear Algebra I

Fall 2004

An introduction to Linear Algebra with dual emphasis on theoretical aspects as well as computational techniques and applications. The presentation begins with the old problem of solving systems of linear equations, which motivates the introduction of matrices, which in turn leads to basic notions of vector spaces and linear transformations. • 12/8: There will be a review session on Wednesday 12/15/2004 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in Kiely 270.

• 11/29: Once again, note that the final exam is scheduled for Wednesday 12/22/2004 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in Kiely 429.

• 11/10: Note that the department has scheduled the final exam for Wednesday 12/22/2004 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Place will be announced later.

• 11/9: Information on the second midterm, including a practice test, has been posted.

• 9/28: Information on the first midterm, including a practice test, has been posted.

• 9/9: Note that there will be no lecture on Thursday 9/16. So the next assignment will be due Tuesday 9/21.

General Information and Ground Rules:

• The class lecture meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:40-3:30 in Kiely 419.

• The course grade is based on the following scheme:
  
  

  Homework	Two Midterms	Final Exam
  20%	20% each	40%

• Homework will be posted on the web every Thursday and will be due the next Thursday at 4:00 pm. Doing homework is an absolutely essential part of this course. You are encouraged to work in groups and discuss the assignments with each other. But the work that you hand in must be your own write up. Please note that late homework will never be accepted.

• If a midterm exam is missed because of a documented illness or valid emergency, the course grade will be determined on the basis of the other work done during the semester. Exams missed for other reasons will count as failures.

• At the end of the semester, everyone who has not withdrawn from the class will receive a grade. Incompletes will not be given to avoid F's.
